CALÓ News reporter Brenda Fernanda Verano has won the 2024 Ruben Salazar National Award presented annually by Latino Journalists of California, CCNMA in a three-way tie in the Digital category.
Verano’s column, “It has been one year since my dad returned to Mexico, and the struggle continues,” was selected for the prestigious award.
The award is bestowed on journalists who have exemplified journalistic excellence while contributing to a better understanding of Latinos in the United States through fair and accurate reporting.
Verano has been a staff reporter At CALÓ News since 2022. She covers social justice, health care and education.
Cynthia Rebolledo and Fidel Martinez were also awarded in the Digital category. Xavier Martinez won in the Print category with “How a migrant farmworker built generational wealth, penny by penny.”
Rebolledo’s story “Artist Alicia Rojas Honors Las Poderosas of Latino Health Access” was posted on Culture OC.
Martinez writes the L.A. Times' “Latinx Files” weekly newsletter, covering issues concerning the Latinx community in Los Angeles and the nation.
