Al Madrigal

CALÓ News, LATV and LatiNation have partnered with comedian, actor and writer Al Madrigal to produce a series of non-partisan short videos and news stories that will inform, educate and give people the tools to fight the spread of disinformation.

“Stop the Dis” is a campaign to fight against voter disinformation in the media and most importantly social media.

From deep fake photos to AI robocalls to social media hoaxes, disinformation is likely to increase as we get closer to the general election in November 2024.

The “Stop the Dis” video starring Madrigal explaining the ways lies are spread online and through phones premieres on Thursday and shared on social media platforms, LatiNation Media, the LATV app, calonews.com and stopthedis.com

According to the Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas (DDIA), disinformation campaigns are spreading baseless attacks against Michelle Obama (again) in Spanish-speaking online spaces and messaging apps.

It’s not just happening with the U.S. election. According to the DDIA, Latino-focused partisan influencers and right-wing media criticized the left-wing coalition's victory in France, likening it to the perceived “decline of Western civilization,” and used fringe and racist language to amplify allegations of election fraud.

“Before we can change reality for the better, we must first agree on what reality is. That's where 'Stop the Dis' comes in," Madrigal said. "I couldn't be prouder to join this effort to discuss the most pressing issue facing the Latino community, the spread of disinformation amongst Latino voters. My hope is that we rise with one voice to identify and squash anyone intentionally sowing confusion in our community.”

Madrigal is Executive Producer for the special, and it was produced with CALÓ News and LatiNation Media/LATV. Executive Producers are Jason Ross, Flavio Morales, Martin Albornoz of CALÓ News, and Andres Palencia and Bruno Seros-Ulloa for LatiNation Media.

When it comes to disinformation, 2024 has been a year like no other. From deep fake photos to AI robocalls to social media hoaxes, we've seen it all. And the rollercoaster ride just might get worse as we get closer to November 2024. CALÓ News and LatiNation have partnered with Al Madrigal to produce a set of non-partisan short videos and news stories that will inform, educate and hopefully give you and your friends the tools to fight the spread of disinformation and help Stop the Dis.
