Another farmers' market will be coming to the City Terrace community of East Los Angeles later this summer, county officials announced Wednesday.
"The need for another neighborhood farmers' market in East Los Angeles in addition to the market at the East Los Angeles Civic Center has been growing for years," Supervisor Hilda Solis, who represents the First District, which includes areas of East L.A., said in a statement.
The nonprofit In the Making will be using county funds to create the market, which will help to address a fresh-food desert in the area, according to Solis' office. The City Terrace farmers' market is also intended to help local small businesses by increasing foot traffic.
"We were thrilled that Supervisor Hilda Solis has entrusted us with the funding to launch the first-ever farmers' market in City Terrace," Edward Chang, co-founder of In the Making, said in a statement. "This new market will not only provide area residents with an unprecedented array of fresh-food options, but it will serve as a go-to destination that will increase foot traffic and open the door to economic revitalization for small businesses throughout the area. "
According to Solis' office, the county has delivered $1.1 million to support farmers' markets in East Los Angeles over the last 10 years. The financial support has helped the Eastmont farmers' market thrive over the last seven years, and the county hopes to replicate more of that success.
"Our partnership with the Eastmont Community Center worked exactly as it was designed -- and which is why we extended our yearly funding with them over those seven years," Solis said in her statement. "We provided the initial funding to help set Eastmont up for success, and they thrived on a scale that is truly impressive."
She noted that Eastmont is expected to expand to a second location at Cal State Los Angeles.
