Octavio Dotel, 51, died after the roof of a nightclub collapsed early Tuesday morning in the Dominican Republic. Dotel was an MLB pitcher who played for the Dodgers.
KTLA reports Dotel was among the more than 58 dead who were enjoying a merengue concert of Rubby Pérez in Santo Domingo. Officials said there were at least 160 injured.
During his MLB career, he played for the New York Mets in 1999 and the Dodgers in 2010, among other teams.
He was part of the St. Louis Cardinals during their 2011 World Series win.
Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi and sister of seven-time Major League Baseball All-Star Nelson Cruz, was also at the Jet Set nightclub and died later at the hospital.
According to Diario Libre, it's estimated that Dotel was trapped for more than 11 hours.
The president of the Dominican Republic Luis Abinader has declared national mourning for April 8, 9 and 10, with all flags at half staff.
