"Primos," a coming-of-age animated comedy that follows a girl with her 12 chaotic primos when they move in for the summer and help her discover her true self, was nominated in the Best TV/Media-Childrens category for the Annie Awards on Friday. The Annies recognize excellence in animation shown in American cinema and television from the past year. Mexican American actress Angélica María voices Buela Ramirez on the Disney show.
The show shares the nomination in the same category with "Gremlins: The Wild Batch," "Jurassic World: Chaos Theory," "Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur" and "WondLa."
"The Wild Robot," the story of a robot who gets shipwrecked on a deserted island and befriends the local wildlife, scored a leading 10 nominations for the 52nd edition of the awards. The film bested Pixar's box-office hit "Inside Out 2," which collected seven nods. "Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl" also scored seven nominations. All three films were nominated in the top category of best animated feature film, along with "Kung Fu Panda 4," "That Christmas" and "Ultraman: Rising."
For independent animated features, nominations went to "Chicken for Linda!," "Flow," "Kensuke's Kingdom," "Look Back," "Mars Express" and "Memoir of a Snail."
On the small screen, nominations for best "mature" animated program went to "Bob's Burgers," "Solar Opposites," "South Park," "The Great North" and "The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy."
The awards will be presented February 8 at UCLA's Royce Hall.
The Annie Awards were created in 1972 and are organized by ASIFA-Hollywood, an organization dedicated to promoting the Art of Animation and celebrating the people who create it.
