Martin Majin Leon, a Pomona resident, was arrested at 9:00 a.m. on April 22 by Border Patrol agents right outside his work site.
In the video provided by his son, Miguel Majin, you can see that his father is arriving at his job location. When he gets out to open the gate, two cars block him, one in the front and one in the back. About seven agents then approach Leon, all pointing their guns at him. Since the arrest, his family members have not been able to get ahold of him.
“We have no information or knowledge of why he got targeted,” said Majin.
Although Leon has no criminal record or history of serious offenses, his son mentioned that he was deported in 2009. However, he believes that this does not justify the excessive force used against his father.
“My dad has properties here in the United States. He pays his taxes every year, so, you know, for this to happen and the way it happened at gunpoint, it's something that's really, it's just shocking for us, for all our families,” he said.
He also mentioned that about a week ago, his father renewed his driver’s license, which makes him wonder if perhaps the Department of Motor Vehicles was involved in providing information.
Initially, Leon wanted to renew his driver's license online but they told him that he had to go in person. While filling out the application to renew his driver's license, Leon decided that instead of updating his address with his home information, he would add his business address, which is where Border Patrol agents made an appearance.
“We are not sure if they [gave] information to Border Patrol or something, but he barely got his renewed license, not even a week ago, and then this happens,” Majin said. CALÓ News reached out to the DMV and is waiting for a response.
The 59-year-old Latino man was not the only one targeted on Tuesday; there were multiple raids happening in the city.
The Pomona Economic Opportunity Center, which is a community organization, conducted an urgent press conference as they confirmed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement had detained workers at Home Depot around 10 a.m.
“Pomona is not safe and I'm pretty sure the Pomona Police Department has something to do with this as well,” said Majin.
