Democrat Robert Garcia was elected as Caucus Leadership Representative.

Garcia successfully won reelection to represent California’s 42nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. By securing his victory with a comfortable margin of 68.2% of the vote, he solidified his position in Congress following his first term.

Garcia, a former mayor of Long Beach, has become a prominent figure in California politics, known for his public health policies and achievements. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as the 28th mayor of Long Beach from 2014 to 2022. In that role, he made history as the city's youngest mayor, its first openly LGBTQIA+ mayor, and the first Latino to hold the office. During his first term in Congress, Garcia made more history as the first LGBTQIA+ immigrant to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Garcia immigrated to the United States at the age of five and credits the progressive changes in immigration law passed by Congress in the 1980s for allowing him to apply for permanent legal residency. He later achieved U.S. citizenship in his early 20s before embarking on his political career. Garcia’s journey from immigrant to lawmaker underscores his deep commitment to immigrant rights and progressive policies.

In a press release addressed to his constituents on November 9, 2024, Garcia stated that he was “committed to fight for community values” by promising his constituents help in navigating federal agencies. Garcia’s office offered support for residents facing challenges with a range of government services, from the Department of Veterans Affairs and Social Security to the Internal Revenue Service and other federal programs, vowing to lead a team focused on resolving bureaucratic issues.

He also promised to continue fighting to lower costs for working families, improve infrastructure, make Southern California’s ports more sustainable, expand access to affordable housing, protect the environment, and stand up for the rights of immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities.

“Whether it’s advocating for progressive education policies, raising wages, or supporting the rights of women, immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community,” he said, “I’m proud to stand up for the values that make our country stronger.”

Despite his strong advocacy for human rights, Congressman Garcia has faced criticism for his centrist positions on the ongoing violence in Gaza, with some raising concerns about his approach to the situation. In the 2022 election, Garcia became one of the first Democrats to receive support from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s (AIPAC) United Democracy Project Super PAC, which spent over $500,000 opposing his challenger, Cristina Garcia. He also received backing from the Democratic Majority for Israel (DMFI) during his 2022 primary, and from 2023 to 2024, Garcia garnered $10,700 in contributions from AIPAC

Since then, Garcia has made some adjustments to his stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict, including calling for a ceasefire.

With an impending second Trump presidency, Garcia now has an opportunity to advance protections for the most vulnerable constituents in his district. He assured voters that while in Washington, his office will remain focused on ensuring that they can access the federal resources and services they rely on while pushing for broader structural changes to improve the lives of those he represents.

“Together, we will continue to build a stronger, fairer, and more inclusive community for everyone,” he stated.
