The Los Angeles City Council voted 12-3 Wednesday to increase the minimum wage for tourism workers at a more gradual rate to $22.50 per hour starting July 1, 2025, rising to $30 per hour by 2028. The vote also approves providing improved health care benefits, a move that comes as the region prepares to host several major sporting events in the coming years.
The city is also preparing for the 2028 Olympics. Tourism workers were hoping to receive an increase of $25 by February 2025 while hotel owners opposed the increase.
To increase the minimum wage, the City Attorney's Office is expected to update the Living Wage and Hotel Workers Minimum Wage ordinances, which will come back to the City Council at a future date.
Tourism workers are represented by labor unions Unite Here Local 11 and SEIU-USWW. Airport and hotel workers currently earn between $18 to $20 per hour.
