Holbox

The Holbox menu features seafood tostadas, aguachiles oysters and more.

The user review site Yelp selected Holbox in South L.A. as number one in its top 100 places to eat in the U.S. for 2025.

Chef Gilbert Cetina curates Mexican dishes inspired by the Yucatán Peninsula and the island where he was born, creating a succulent menu from fish tacos to aguachiles and kanpachi and uni tostada that has earned the restaurateur a Michelin star. It has also been featured in the Los Angeles Times 101 Best Restaurant list and was named Restaurant of the Year in 2023.

The Michelin site describes the restaurant as “spectacular quality seafood of unassailable freshness leaves an impression, whether in electrifyingly vibrant aguachiles and ceviches, excellent tacos served on house-made heirloom corn tortillas, or skillfully grilled lobster—a panoply of exceptional house salsas gilds the lily.”

Despite all its accolades, Holbox is an unassuming seafood stand where you order at the counter, located inside the Mercado La Paloma across from a DMV office just off the 110 freeway and a few blocks away from USC.

They change their menu frequently and have a tasting menu on Wednesdays and Thursdays, by reservation only.

Holbox is located at 3655 S Grand Ave #C9, Los Angeles, CA 90007.
