With over 500 signatures, a petition online called on the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to reinstate the football offseason training at Miguel Contreras Learning Complex, a high school in downtown Los Angeles.
Last week, concerned parents, allies and community members signed the petition via change.org after learning that the athletics administration had cut off football off-season training. The school added the sport to its program in January 2024.
This decision resulted in the resignation of five coaches, including the head coach, Manuel Guevara.
Players, parents and community members said year-round training is critical for performance and player safety, as football requires proper conditioning to reduce injury risks.
Ashly Garcia's child signed up for football at Miguel Contreras as soon as the program began. She said that many students experienced football for the first time and were lucky to have passionate coaches.
Garcia said Coach Guevara told a room full of over 70 parents and guardians that all students were welcome even if they had no experience because what mattered was the love for the game.
“He and the rest of the coaching staff trained and conditioned kids who had never touched a football before with no hesitation,” Garcia said on the change.org petition. “These coaches dedicated their time, energy and money since they were not paid until June. As someone who has a student on the team, I can say these five coaches showed their love and support on and off the field every single day.”
Parents agreed that their first season was very special as students and coaches worked together and gave their best to put Miguel Contreras on the map.
“This team has the full support of family and parents. And we will continue to show support for our Pico Union boys!” said Garcia.
Miguel Contreras Learning Complex has about 400 students from grades 9-12. More than 93% are Latino, and 26% are English Learners.
LAUSD listens to the community
Last week, LAUSD announced that the decision to limit off-season workouts for football players at the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex was to allow them to participate in multiple sports. However, after receiving additional input from community members, LAUSD told CALÓ News they are reinstating offseason workouts, in accordance with California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) regulations, beginning Feb. 18, 2025.
“We value all sports and remain committed to providing students with opportunities that enhance their learning experience and potential,” said an LAUSD spokesperson. “Thank you for your engagement and collaboration in creating a positive school experience for all."
