Earlier this month, a nonprofit organization called Ayudando Latinos A Soñar (ALAS) and three offices owned by the United Farm Workers received postcards with discriminatory threats.
The postcards, which read “report illegal aliens” and “there is nowhere to hide,” are seen as a threat aimed at the union’s undocumented laborers. The same messages appeared on the postcard sent to ALAS, and they were all reportedly postmarked in Oakland.
The threatening postcards were also noted to report undocumented immigrants at schools, work areas, churches and restaurants and even in neighborhoods.
The postcards were received in the same week that the Trump administration had overturned longstanding policies that limited immigration enforcement in sensitive locations, such as schools and churches. This policy change enables officers to arrest undocumented individuals in these areas in order to strengthen immigration law enforcement.
Now that Trump, through one of many executive orders, has permitted Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers to detain suspected undocumented immigrants in a range of locations, United Farm Workers have been hosting “Know Your Rights Workshops” to educate farmworkers who are undocumented on what they should do if they are confronted by immigration enforcement officials.
