On Wednesday, the nonprofit organization Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) is hosting a workshop to educate and empower the immigrant community by helping them understand their rights in light of the incoming Trump administration’s threat to deport millions of undocumented immigrants immediately after taking office.
CHIRLA’s “Prepare to Stay / Prepárate para Quedarte” workshops will focus on what documents to prepare, what steps to take to protect family and children and what pitfalls to avoid.
“The best tool to take charge of our own destiny is education and knowing how to practice our rights as immigrants protected under the Constitution,” said Miriam Mesa, director of community outreach and education at CHIRLA.
Some of the topics covered at the workshop include: understanding your rights as an immigrant, creating a family plan, ensuring children are cared for if the head of household is detained or deported, avoiding common pitfalls during this challenging time, knowing what to do if ICE arrives at your door, getting involved in the community, accessing available resources and much more.
Organizations like CHIRLA are preparing for a rise in demand for their support in the coming year under the Trump administration, anticipating a surge in requests for assistance from immigrant communities.
The workshops are held every Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Los Angeles CHIRLA headquarters. No appointment is necessary.
