Huntington Park officials announce free Wi-Fi for the city in public areas for phase one.

The city of Huntington Park announced plans to offer free wireless internet to its residents.

According to councilmember Graciela Ortiz, the goal is to offer free internet for all residents but phase one will be to offer Wi-F- access to all public parks.

Phase two will provide wifi access to the west side of the city.

“This is a historic day for the city of Huntington Park,” said Vice Mayor Karina Macias. “There are many cities in the southeast region that are working to create smart cities.” But, she said, Huntington Park “is really the pioneer.”

The city has approximately 70,000 residents.

Officials said during the pandemic, access to the internet became critical for students and families.

“When I proposed this state-of-the-art system that will provide internet access to thousands of members of our community, I knew it would be the beginning of enhancing the education for the children in our community,” Ortiz said. “Our children and families deserve all the resources they need to obtain success.”
