A Mexican bakery in Compton reopened today after a mob of looters almost destroyed it during an illegal street takeover. A large group entered Ruben's Bakery & Mexican Food at the intersection of El Segundo Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue. Security gates and walls were knocked down, and store merchandise and equipment were stolen.

The family has an active GoFundMe page, where it has over 785 contributions since it launched two days ago. There were customers that came down to the store from various cities in Southern California to support the bakery. Some individuals came down just to simply make a donation. Today the bakery opened at its regular business hours servicing regular customers.

The family will also be baking and selling the traditional Rosca bread this Saturday for the Day of the Three Kings holiday.

A celebration for Dia de los Reyes at Olvera Street

On Saturday, January 6, 2024 Olvera Street will be having a celebration for the arrival of Los Tres Reyes. The event will include live music, and a short theatrical procession. They will also have the traditional Rosca, or sweet bread that will be given to all who attend. Inside the Rosca bread there will be plastic babies randomly placed, which will represent the baby Jesus.

The traditional activity normally dictates that the person who finds the baby has to plan the party for the next year. But at Olvera Street, finds the babies inside will win a prize that evening. Take it as a gift from the kings!
