A Latino family is looking for justice for the death of Amanda Torres, known as “Dandy Mandi,” who was fatally stabbed last Saturday in the Fashion District in Downtown Los Angeles.
The 28-year-old community organizer was stabbed on January 26 at around one in the morning, and Torres' family is searching for information about who did it.
According to her family’s statement on their GoFundMe page, Torres was stabbed multiple times outside of an after-hours warehouse party after intervening to protect her brother, who had been attacked by two or three men.
“Amanda was with her brother and best friend,” according to a post on the @JusticeForMandi account on Instagram made and run by her family.
The alleged attacker was reportedly wearing all black clothing, and another person accompanying him was wearing glasses and a navy bomber jacket with a white collar lining.
Torres, who was known in the ska scene and as a strong community organizer in Los Angeles, was a UCLA alumna who graduated in 2021. “Mandi stood for justice and now it’s our turn to be there for her,” her mother, Emma Christina Torres, wrote via a GoFundMe post.
“She donated her time to feed the fire department and other people in the community,” her father, Rogelio Torres, told ABC7 Los Angeles. “She was always for helping people.”
“An amazing soul” and “full of love and life” is how some of her friends and loved ones have described her on the active Instagram page created to “bring justice” to Torres.
In an Instagram post comment, Torres’ best friend said she performed CPR on her when the incident happened after the security guard of the event’s venue organized by Space Yacht, CYBER RODEO, and UNDERWAR3 “was just standing there.”
The family is currently raising funds to cover the costs of her funeral expenses and is asking the public to come forward with any information about that night.
“We want the word out about what happened to Mandi and find the perpetrator who is responsible for this senseless act of violence,” the family stated on GoFundMe.
If you have any tips regarding Torres’ death, the family is asking you to email JusticeForMandi@gmail.com or call the LAPD tip line at (877) 529-3835.
